How it works
- Light Banding: grey or wavy lines that may appear on your photos and/or videos during filming
- Rolling Shutter: the process by which new, high-speed digital cameras take photos. Images are built by capturing each individual, pixelated line one vertical column at a time.
- FPS: Stands for "Frames Per Second," or how many individual lines are captured by the camera lens per second
- LED Flicker Rates: CosmoGlo uses LEDs that flicker on and off at an extremely fast rate. It's so fast that your eye can't physically even see it happening. This is also why the CosmoGlo is dimmable: the extremely fast flicker rate can be sped up or slowed down with your dimmer knob, thus increasing or decreasing the amount of power/light emitted!
Light Banding is caused when the speed of a digital camera's Rolling Shutter is not lining up with the speed at which your LEDs flicker.
- Light banding can be captured when using high-speed cameras like the ones in our phones because of how that image is digitally captured. The rate/speed at which the LED flickers sometimes may not be in sync with the frame rate of your Rolling Shutter.
- What happens is the camera ends up capturing a "line" when it snaps images at a different speed than the LED lights are emit light waves. It essentially builds a photo from snapshots and some of those frames per second catch the moments where the LEDs are flickering dimmer, then brighter, then dimmer, thus creating the lines.
What do I do to fix it?
- Rolling shutter capture happens extremely quickly, but not fast enough to avoid the light changes your LED light goes through moment to moment when flickering!
- Thankfully, digital cameras usually have 30 or 60 frames per second or "FPS" option, or sometimes a manual FPS option.
- It's usually quickly adjustable in your camera's settings using tricks like changing the exposure, as seen in Vaude's Reel!
